I had to kick up a fuss along with other composers and they ended up paying me over $7,000 in unpaid royalties, a life-changing amount of money that had been kept back by them. This was specifically due to mismanagement by the founder, Sebastian Wolff, who I think remains at the company.

It boggles my mind that this company's still around and acquiring new releases, while finer video game music labels like Ship To Shore have shuttered and had their catalogs absorbed by Materia. In one music community, you should not be able to have this many scandals and be the one that lives.

I'm sharing this thread now, years after my issue was resolved, because I wanted to add this part of their history to the new struggles folks are having. I'm right there with you, they are the record label that made me hate record labels. They need to rethink striking gameplay videos and music.

Because they own so many popular game soundtracks (still, somehow), they may just be around forever. I may always feel that nasty pang seeing their booth at a con and remembering the thousands of dollars they kept back from us. I'm also around, and I won't forget their 2021. Thanks for reading.

to make sure i'm wrapping my head around this entirely: this is a company who exists mainly to allow game publishers to offer their soundtracks without having to navigate music copyright, right? like, paying artists wouldn't be an odd job that gets lost in the shuffle. it's what they exist to do.

(also, they're copyright striking?? for songs from video game soundtracks? why?? i was under the impression devs wanted to prevent that as much as possible because disincentivizing twitch streamers from playing their game is just burning an entire branch of promotion and exposure)

Yep, their main job is to handle the business side of things and make sure their artists are paid, promoted and secure, that is correct. The copyright striking baffles me. I thought every VGM owner was on the same page about that one, you let soundtracks flow and get more popular.

Oh it’s bc they have a different logo for all their different branches and this one is P for publishing. But still it’s like, so funny they are doing a logo that is nearly identical to one of the most well known indie logos lol

The obvious choice would be something resembling materia, but they're probably already flying too close to the sun with appearing vaguely connected to Final Fantasy in some way
