hi Bluesky! 🦋 i’ve been chosen as the new head of product here at Bluesky HQ! and i couldn’t be more excited to hack with this incredibly talented team on making this site better for everyone.

since i started coding in my teens, i’ve been obsessed with making social apps and tools that let anyone build their own communities on the open web. no walled gardens, no shady incentives.

we all deserve more of the good parts of social media with less of the bad. that’s why i joined Bluesky. i personally want a better place to hang out and have real conversations online. i think the world does too. we have wind in our sails.

as head of product, my job is simple: listen to you and bring you more of what you want from social. first up… a feature so requested, we lost count of how many times you asked. any guesses??

atproto records (bsky posts) will NEVER be editable. Once created, they cannot be changed. However, bluesky will likely build 'edit' records that reference previous posts. When the app shows a post, it will show the most recent edit instead. I'd expect it to allow anyone to view the history.

that is how it works under the hood, but updating a record is already possible. still just another commit on the repo but to implementers it would function just the same as an in-place mutation. you can even specify what version of a record you want when retrieving! docs.bsky.app/docs/api/com...

Cool! Far smarter to have it work across all atproto records. BlueSky just needs to update the front-end to display it properly. BlueSky won't show the change if you use this to update a record on your own pds, right?

i'm not sure, i guess you'd have to look into how records are ingested in the appview, and whether updates are taken in or not. i wouldn't imagine they wrote code to update posts just yet because that isn't in the UI, so i don't think it would work right now...but who knows.
