Having worked as a wedding photographer for quite a few years - I was pretty insane about backups. There’s nothing like the dread of a failed card or drive that can cook a critical chunk of/or an entire wedding.

Randomly, I started reaching out to friends, family, and former clients just to inform them that I was gonna be deleting these drives. What was surprising was how few people managed to retain their digital files overtime. I did not expect to get overjoyed responses that I still retained a backup

I just assumed that people would store important and expensive photos for years - but turns out that after the big day is done. Unless they go and print or have an album made - life happens, computers die, people move, and they lose these important memories and mementos.

Maybe it’s an artifact of the digital age, that we just simply don’t value digital goods in the same way we do physical ones. Nonetheless, it was an interesting learning for me.
