Good questions - the GitHub Copilot backend service will remain closed source, and models used by GitHub Copilot are licensed separately (and are mostly third party) so there will be no change there. It is specificially the VS Code extension source code that is being open sourced

Alright, I understand now, that only the client side copilot extension will be open source. I'm not really into using VS Code but was slightly interested to see custom LLMs working with GitHub copilot. Just like GitLab introduced with the "Duo SelfHosted" setup ;)
