Fascinating article, in that it's all about the farm life (and toning down the "90+ cows" and "200+ acres" side of things) and losses that pushed him into selling. The Trump mention is almost a throwaway line. At no point does Brad say he might reconsider his political choices.

why should he? They try to paint a picture like they are doing a Grapes of Wrath and loading up the truck with a bunch of shoeless kids wearing potato sacks. But these guys are upper-mid class business owners. They're gonna walk away with a couple million in the bank.

Eh, dairy farming is not a lucrative agricultural practice, especially with a herd of that size. Small dairy farms have been dying for years and these conditions are just accelerating the family operations like his. The big money of farms comes from the ones with lots of high yield acres.

Yeah, this "the farm is going bust" is "we have somewhere around a quarter-million dollars, even more if we sell the land & equipment, to get started with something else." It's not "we're going to be on the streets." It's "the career my family's done for generations is no longer profitable."

That’s assuming no farm debt, as farmers frequently use their property as collateral for the enormous amount of borrowing they have to do for supplies and equipment. That’s what the farm crisis of the 80’s was all about.
