Studies have shown the lasting harmful impact of removing a child from their home and recommended that it only be done when there is no other option to protect the child. And my own personal experience confirms it for me.

When I was around 7 I was living with my mom and her then bf. We were poor (no child support) and had no power. We lived in a house with a water pump, so no power also meant no running water. I got sick. My dad's new wife was a medical transcriptionist at the hospital, saw my name, and told my dad.

For reasons I don't understand (He had taken custody of me whenever he wanted to play helpless single dad...and then sent me back to my mom as soon as he got a gf.) my dad got court ordered custody and had Child Services go and pick me up to day I was released from the hospital.

But they didn't get me at the hospital. They waited until I was released and followed us while we got a ride home from a neighbor. (My mom says with no advanced warning or notice about the court case, much less order.) It was just a collection of 3 or 4 sedans following us down a dirt road.
