Both Stephen Colbert & Jim Carrey said they were doing comedy for their moms. To make her laugh. Sweet. Good parents too

I am a stone cold Conan partisan but this aspect of Colbert is unparalleled, not just by late-night hosts, but by most human beings.

Some of the other hosts have had moments of candor and seriousness like that (I can think of a few with Letterman, cynic though he is) but not many. And they find it hard, for personal or professional reasons, not to resort to a wink.
