"That’s an underappreciated feature of our political age: It’s not just that things are bad, it’s that they’re relentlessly so. You can’t turn it off. You can’t escape it. You can’t distinguish between real and fake, good and bad, normal and abnormal. The stuff keeps piling up." 👇

Gross: "When I asked my grandma about it, she showed me her phone. Her texts, it turns out, are absolutely clogged with the scuzziest GOP fundraising solicitations imaginable." www.thebulwark.com/p/when-maga-...

A few years ago I had to help clean up the computer at my in-laws’ house. They had let their antivirus expire and my FIL was clicking on all sorts of crazy stuff (yes, it’s what you’re thinking). I had to go into their emails and I was blown away at all the stuff from GOP wackos they got every day

I was discussing with someone the other day about how Harry Potter is popular because it caught the tail end of when there was enough monoculture for ONE thing to go everywhere like that. We wracked our brains to think of anything with similar breadth today and concluded the only thing is politics.

Music, books, movies, etc. are partitioned down into micro-targeted subgroups. But politics is still experienced as a shared thing still because it impacts the real world and we can’t escape it. Our only shared experience is a relentless assault on our sanity.

And only after they‘re in power! Before he was sworn in seemingly every group was served their own version of Trump and the MAGA world by the media. Palestine activists and the Israeli right both saw a version of THEIR guy. It’s bananas!

The GOP grifters flood them in texts, Facebook and email. Real friends and family messages are lost in the deluge. Happened with my step-father.
