The forced global adoption of puritanistic American cultural norms vis sexuality and nudity via app store/payment processor rules is one of the least-discussed free speech issues of the last decade and this lack of attention is going to hurt online expression so much in the years to come.

I think also we cannot ignore the potential social and cultural ramifications of normalizing the demonification of anything adult or sexual The whole system is stacked against any sort of movement in the other direction and it's not something the porn industry can handle alone at this point

I truly wonder how many Evil Tech Decisions were actually caused by payment processors forcing hands behind the scene (both forcing the hands of the app stores and directly of developers)

I've definitely seen the dynamic play out in terms of how Bluesky has evolved. No developer can question these norms if they want to stay in the app stores (and thus have any chance of success) so we get weirdness like Grindr forcing all profile photos to be G-rated.

Visa, MasterCard, PayPal, Google and Apple should absolutely not be the sole arbiters of what types of speech are allowed to be monetised online globally, but that's ultimately what it boils down to.
