Up next in McAllen: We’re visiting the Achieve Early College High School to visit the CTE program. Today we got to see students’ culinary work - chicken parmesan is on the menu today. Students make everything from scratch and even grow some ingredients in the garden. 🍝 @rweingarten.bsky.social

As instructor Monica Flores pointed out, the program’s culinary students are one of only 2 schools in the area with the TX PROSTART culinary curriculum - each year they compete in Waco to cook 3 courses for judges. This is a huge opportunity for students to show off their skills!

The culinary students here are working on opening a cafe in partnership with McAllen’s S.T.R.I.D.E.S. program, for students 18+ with different learning abilities. S.T.R.I.D.E.S. students will run the front of the cafe, getting hands on experience in hospitality as well. 🍳

Achieve offers students the chance to earn associates’ degrees in high school, and they also offer CTE options in the culinary field, in forensic science, in medical assistance and EMT training, and more. Today we got to visit a forensic science class. 🧪
