the number of people i see expressing the desire that AI should be conscious so they can torture it convinces me that 1) they're all sheep who will swallow whatever swill jreg sells 2) they are deliberately performing evil behavior to establish ingroup solidarity, as is a classic in gangs

I'm making a joke, but we're literally all here signalling virtue all day every day in every social interaction and if it feels like a virtuous statement to you to some extent it's still a social signal.

I don't mean offense by this. Every personal interaction might be a "virtue signal" but virtue signalling is good, actually, and establishes a baseline for how society should behave, which is, basically, virtuous.

It is not wrong to aspire to the moral high ground. It does not mean surrender, or fighting with your hands tied behind your back, but it does mean not simply going lower than evil in an attempt to out-evil each other A better world is worth fighting for, even when it’s hard
