Hi everyone I was denied entry, detained, and deported from the USA over the last 48 hours because of my reporting on the Columbia student protests I arrived back in Melbourne hours ago and had my phone handed back to me upon landing

- They were waiting for me when I got off the plane - They knew (or it felt like they knew) everything about me - I had cleaned up my online presence expecting ad hoc digital sweeps; I was not prepared for their sophistication - Sophistication almost certainly facilitated by Palantir

They just came out and said it: “We both know why you’ve been detained…it’s because of what you wrote about the protests at Columbia”

Your experience, and others, explain this in The Age. "A new survey released by the Lowy Institute think tank in Sydney showed that 72 per cent of respondents said they didn’t trust Trump to act responsibly in global affairs, just edging out the 71 per cent who said they didn’t trust China’s Xi."

I'll be writing all this up with more detail shortly. For now I'll just say---I believe what I say and say what I believe. The offending posts are all online. Find out for yourself if my words post a danger to the US and *subscribe to my substack* www.kitchencounter.blog

Even so, I would replace the phone. The advice to do so was right on the money. Once potentially malicious actors have physical access, it can be compromised in ways that are _extremely_ hard to detect, let alone mitigate.

Hi Alistair, what a harrowing experience. Is it your impression that the US is now analyzing passenger lists with tech like we see in the movies and _Person of Interest_, doing deep dives on every individual, including social media posts, employment, etc., even before they take a person's phone?

This is so embarrassing for those of us who have not lost our minds. I am sorry our country treated you this way. I pray this will end soon and we can work on earning back trust from our allies.

We're no longer the land of the free sadly and I'm so sorry that this is how our country violated you and other tourists based on if they support our president or not. This is as anti-American as it gets. None of this is normal and its very scary this is what our country is now.
