I saw a post the other day suggesting that the initial Steam game submission fee be significantly increased to reduce the “slop”. At first, I thought that was a lousy idea. A lot of indie devs don’t have the money to cover those costs. 🧵 ...

But now that I’ve seen the “slop” at Next Fest, I actually think the idea is pretty good. The thing is, do you have confidence in your game? On Steam, you get the fee refunded once you’ve generated enough revenue. That’s why I don’t think a higher fee is a bad thing.

I don’t know if it’s the best solution, but I really appreciate the Steam Storefront as a dev and as a gamer and hope it doesn’t go to the dogs. One more thing: This post isn’t about AI. Slop has always existed... it’s just that AI accelerates the whole process immensely.

Problem I see with this is that all the "slop" still finds enough users, making it questionable if the increased fee really is a reasonable tool if refunded by Steam anyway. Thing is: If you set the bar too high you punish the indies and their proper work, if too low we'll probably see more slop.
