ok i'm tired of talking about politics, can i please whine for the briefest moment about the influencers being bad at content analysis of books and tv

I will fully say up front, I love Dungeon Crawler Carl and Pluribus, both of which are ending up on a bunch of people's EOY lists which is why this dippy discourse is happening but like the haters are not even hating properly on these properties

Because I like both of these things, the algorithm shows me haters of these things, because the algorithm is a dippy asshole. Every once in a while, I happen upon a hater who has really consumed a thing and has a good read. There are fair critiques out there! BUT

More often than not, I run into the most surface-level possible shit that essentially boils down to "this thing is bad because in < episode/chapter 1 > the < main character > did/said < a thing that wasn't the most perfect deal > and thus < this is a fascist project > and like no

I do not think this is a generational thing, I am not inclined to dip on young people. I see this from ~ influencers ~ of many/all ages, grappling for some kind of weird post-tumblrclout for who can dunk hardest on a thing without consuming it

but like WOOF it is so tiresome. there actually is a lot of dippy bullshit out there in the world! ripe for the dunking! stuff that doesn't even pretend to be careful or thoughtful in its execution!

idk (and this is on me) I watched a 20-minute youtube video about how ~ Vince Gilligan is running a pro-capitalist psyop with Pluribus ~ from a person who watched 1.5 episodes and was like "i've seen enough"

anyway character and narrative development is great, basically the things stories are made of, if what you are looking for are narratives where people who are already perfect do stuff where they beat irredeemable bad guys every time, i really can't even recommend children's books on this front

i wonder if ppl just don’t realize how media gets made? you can get a good sense of a show by watching the first 3 episodes bc those 3 are usually the meat of what gets it sold + establishes everything to come. it’s often setup-secondary setup-expansion. you get nothing from just 1-2 eps.
