Seeing discussion elsewhere about whether The Rich should be able to access public services for free even tho they're rich, and like, why are we so focused on whether people "deserve" things?

Poor people don't "deserve" free services if they're not angelically perfect and being poor the right way. Rich people don't "deserve" free services because they could afford to pay. Here's a thought! Public services should be services for The Public--i.e. EVERYONE.

"But what if someone lies and cheats to get..." I don't care. Just give it to everyone. "But they don't des..." shut up. What do YOU deserve? Oh, everything you want? Everything you think you need? "Oh that's different, you see, I..." No it's not and no you don't.

I'm with Hamlet on this one. "Use every man after his desert, and who should 'scape whipping? Use them after your own honour and dignity. "

Read an online comment last year (that I wish I could resurface) surmising that Americans believe themselves to be each other's prison wardens. That we constantly feel the need to control each other's prison environment. Made too much sense.
