Brits really do not understand just how fucking huge the US is and just how we end up adopting linguistic quirks. The truth of the matter though is that Black US culture drives the majority of it and often overrides (and gets confused with) regional dialects. It's why we don't say yous/yinz.

Minor point but I really hate this performative “y’all” people do to try and appear more folksy. I don’t type in a Yorkshire accent and I did people would rightly tell me to shut up.

person raised in a society where accent subtleties are *extremely* rigid and powerful status signals cannot comprehend a world where expressions travel freely due to sheer scale

The flip side to this is that there is a filter (some would say gatekeeping) where some words are acceptable to adopt but not others. There's no problem saying y'all or even no cap but you would look weird af trying to use finna But there's also a gen gap where the kids do not hesitate to adopt it

I was in a board meeting where some of the older white guys were complaining about not knowing certain 'new words the younger crowd was using' and I instantly knew they only had white friends because black people been using those for decades and Latinos adopted it not that long after.
