You can understand Max reacting. The referee saw more in it than anyone else, and it's never a red. I think Mikel Arteta's reaction was really poor. He's 16, your job – in every aspect – is to protect him. Lessons can be learned behind the scenes, not in front of the cameras.

Have I missed something, does anyone actually know what was said??? Arteta didn't look happy, but when does he ever during any point of a football match? I think we are confusing body language with facts here

I respect Max for what he did. We should’ve roughed these hacks up earlier in the game. No respect for Mikel for playing all our starters and failing to beat a League 2 manager.

This is getting blown out of all proportion by Arsenal writers and bloggers all over social media and will be lapped up by those who don’t have our best interests at heart. Mountain out of a mole hill for me. None of us know what was said and what his relationship with Max is like. Pure conjecture.

I think Mikel got done dirty by the camera focusing on it. I didn't catch the first bit, but I think he followed up with "get down the tunnel" so it might not have been as bad as it appeared.

Not what he said, what he didn't say and how he said what he did say, if that makes sense, clearly annoyed with Max, almost doubling down on his reaction.

Agreed can give him a stern word behind close doors to remind him even though its very difficult at times to not react. Protect him in the public eye!. Said previously our fire power upfront is lacking there were enough chances tonight for at least 1 /2 goals. Still think we need a killer in the box

I disagree on Mikel's reaction. It looked almost performative to me and quite deliberate. I trust him to know how to get the best out of Max and at the moment - when everyone else is dangling the carrot in front of the wonderkid - Mikel thought it was a good chance to use the stick.

In real time it looks like an overzealous, yellow card tackle and a violent, red card lashing out reaction from Max. Replays give a lot of nuance. The ref only has real time. VAR might have intervened. Might have...

Congratulations to Fleetwood Congratulations to Arsenal to a dignified exit of a competition that cost us big last season. Sending off will be a positive in the long run.

The whole incident, from the tackle, to the referee’s decision pretty much encapsulates why England will never win the World Cup… not in my lifetime.

My read is that Mikel will have been livid both for the impact on team (and probably still fuming at others) and because in reacting, Max has unfortunately just encouraged more of this.

Nope disagree. He's a first team player, we expect him to cover for our best player for the next 6 weeks. He's now going to miss 3 league games. He's old enough to play he can't be coddled. He's learned a lesson today and it's better that harsh lessons are learned now.

Max would've done better to go down and milk the foul a bit. As it was, he kicks the guy on the floor (albeit without a great deal of force) and gives the ref the opportunity. Anyone think VAR would've overturned it?

I guess I always expected to get yelled at when making mistakes growing up, so I'm okay with it. He is in the first team. It's not his debut. I expect any player to get admonished for that. Preferred it was done off camera but Arteta now takes the heat off the players. Which is fine also.
