I'm ready to accept a definition of "agent" that I think is widely-enough agreed upon to be useful, at least in the AI engineering space: An LLM agent runs tools in a loop to achieve a goal (I've been dismissing the term as hopelessly ambiguous for years) simonwillison.net/2025/Sep/18/...

simonwillison.netI think “agent” may finally have a widely enough agreed upon definition to be useful jargon nowI’ve noticed something interesting over the past few weeks: I’ve started using the term “agent” in conversations where I don’t feel the need to then define it, roll my eyes …
I care because I like to have productive conversations where everyone understands what the other person is talking about I wrote a bunch more about this in my post simonwillison.net/2025/Sep/18/...

I have productive conversations with a team. We say "Did you install the cert agent?" and no one thinks it's an AI tool - they think it's the Azure Key Vault VM Extension thing. Same for logging agent, etc, and "agentless" is a log standing term Even for our AI agents it's just a background process
