i remember back when i was into reading spider-man comics, if an artist redrew something or referenced another artist they would credit them with an apology (re: all apologies to john romita etc.) so i often try and do that if i drop in on one of these.

thinking about the popularity of so many "redraw trends" and plagiarism of compositions by all sorts of artists (it comes up often for gposing but 2D artists do it too). i have to sum up my discomfort with it as follows: it's artists treating other artists the same way A/I treats art as data

i also think that, if i do drop in on these i like to deviate a little more from the original and make my own joke, i feel when you do a redraw it should reflect you as well. it shouldn't just be a carbon copy.

you should also consider what is compelling about the original image that inspired you to take it on yourself. was it the composition? the coloring? the concept itself? what did you learn by studying it?

anyway i think redraws are a helpful tool. a way to recognize and acknowledge the talent around you. a way to give back to what inspires you. at least this is how i feel about it. acknowledgement is really important.
