It's social contagion akin to Orson Wells War of the Worlds radio broadcast. The large drones being seen are private eVTOLS like Helix or Jetson One that came onto the market this year.

Also, Joby Air eVTOLs started testing in New York to be air taxes starting next year. Also in Chicago and SanFran. Also JetsonOne has sold over 100 eVTOLs to American customers starting this year. It ALL coincides with the first reports in September. This combines with hysteria is the answer.
