Reminding detained people of their humanity was one of the goals of the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership when they sued the Department of Homeland Security in November after the group of faith leaders was denied access to the U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing facility in Broadview.

At the time, hundreds of people were being held at the facility, and federal agents tear-gassed and shot pepper-ball bullets at protesters who regularly gathered outside.

Earlier this year, a federal judge sided with the interfaith coalition, and in mid-May, immigration authorities and clergy leaders reached an agreement that allowed daily religious visits to resume. Litigation will continue this fall.
