Being involved with a new edition of Phoenix is an honor (and a huge responsibility). The series will be published in six large-sized (7x10") hardcover editions with cloth casewrap, screenprinting, and gold foil. Feat. the original Dadakai translation with revisions/updates & letters by @sara.pizza

The art comes from the 2020 Japanese edition by Fukkan, which painstakingly restored the artwork to its original appearance in magazine serialization from 1954–1988. Any pages that were presented in 2-4 colors will be reproduced with those colors. We are printing the 1c pages in black & white.

Chapter title pages have been restored, including some beautiful paneling that was removed from all previous collected editions in Japan & the U.S. The books will read right to left. The art is full-res (B5 size). To get into the weeds—we are deviating from the Fukkan presentation in a few ways.

Collected Japanese editions removed any text at the top of each magazine chapter that summarized the "story so far." That text has been restored in the Fukkan editions, but we're leaving it out of ours for a smoother reading experience.

So, will this have the prototype chapters of Nostalgia and Civil War? The 1954 Prototype series (different than the viz Vol 12). Or the weird false start that happened in Civil War half way cause Tezuka couldn't finish the chapter in time?

Where text is missing or typos/mistakes occur in the magazine version, we're restoring the text/correcting the mistakes. The Fukkan books presented Phoenix EXACTLY as it appeared in original serialization, which is interesting for Japanese readers who can compare them to the many others available...

…but this will be the only version in print in English, so we're trying to strike a balance, including the restored original artwork but deferring where possible to the version of the story Tezuka considered "final."

I cannot adequately express my gratitude to Tezuka Pro and @kodansha.us for entrusting this project to me and the team. It's still hard for me to believe we're actually doing this, after so many years of hoping. We'll do our best not to let you down.
