A few years back I met a current administrator from the music school I attended in the 80s and asked what it was like now; he said (excitedly!) "We are ALL IN on AI!" and was confused when my response was anger and confusion. Someone's paying $90K a year to have their kid NOT learn to make music?

This is why I get so annoyed with university admins who insist we must teach AI or our students will be left behind. Fine, then require one class and leave the rest of us alone. (After about two weeks in the class, they’ll be like, “shit, what do we do now?” but that’s not my problem.)

I'm lucky! Hefty scholarships in undergrad and a fellowship for my master's left me zero debt, and I happened to stumble into a series of positions working in music technology, but... it's like in the 80s if all of the English majors' classes were "how to use a word processor"

The idea of someone graduating at 22 with a quarter million in student loan debt and not even the skill to play wedding gigs? My dad did NOT want me to study music and I understand it now that my own kids are through college and supporting themselves (also w/zero debt)

He wanted me to be an engineer and I guess the big joke is that I was unable to prevent that from being my fate. I just went about it in a really weird way.
