I spent the summer of 1981 as a counselor at a music camp that was located on the campus of Bard College, in the Hudson Valley. It was a mix of really talented young people and really rich NYC kids whose parents wanted them gone for 6 weeks. (1/n)

I'm still friends with some of them, my friend Jamie is a music teacher/working musician in the Scranton area, my friend Marty ended up a few years behind me in college, and has since done a bunch of composing for dance and TV and has been the drummer for They Might Be Giants for the past 20 years.

There was also a 12-year old kid with a really distinctive name who enjoyed hanging with the much older 16/17 year olds. Also memorable because he brought 1 suit for performance days, and it was a vivid salmon color.

In the 90s, I heard a catchy pop song about breathing on the radio in my wife's car and they back-announced it as being the new track from Duncan Sheik. Wait -- the kid in the pink suit?  He went on to a bunch of other successes that I enjoyed watching. RIP Duncan. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/18/a...
