Post

Sam, the team, and the books have given me much delight over the years (FTR I wrote a piece for the SNES book), one misstep (and correction) won’t stop me from supporting them.

I would also like to make clear that I thought the original tweets that started this were weird and possibly gross but I could ignore them - it's strictly this grifter gloating like this that did it for me

I was happy to find an outlet that published books about my hobby. I was even happier finding a book about rpgs on the snes. I can now see there was nothing worth being happy about. Just a right wing grifter stealing content, and a cruddy publishing firm that promotes stolen artwork. :(

Companies should seriously consider whether it's worth it to advertise on Blueskay, given that they run the constant risk of even the slightest offense leading to an attempted lynching by a mob of moral supremacists.

Well, I think that Bitmap Books doesn't need money from "a third-world country" anymore. As a BRAZILIAN client since the beginning of the company, I can't support them anymore. It was a good ride.

The only way that I will buy a book of Bitmap Books again is if they cancel the contract with that author. Give him back the rights to the book and find better partners. I will not buy a product from a company that support an author that insults my country [or any people at all].

The first book I bought was in 2018. I used to make at least one order [3+ books] per year, to be delivered at Christmas time. I still haven't made this year's order and, apparently, I will save some money.

Those are myopic and idiotic beliefs to be sure, but it's not even in the top 10,000 most offensive things I've seen from various writers. Is there more to this? Otherwise, I'd be angrier at him siding with the chuds than the actual posts.

The author wrote this book so he needs to be paid, and doesn’t deserve any kind of abuse or threat. But "We stand together?" "He apologized?" The guy is on X publicly celebrating his "victory" over his critics!

same - everybody can make a mistake and apologize and I might accept it, but the fact that he's now gloating about cancel culture over their reversal means my copy is going back and no more bitmap for me

I don’t even fully know what’s going on beyond yesterday’s “we’re sorry” and this “well…” but I bought two of your books last year and now I’m really doubtful about getting any more. It shouldn’t be hard to vet authors, contributors, etc.

This is a shame. I tended to buy your books on-sight for subjects I was interested in - the Metal Slug book is one of my faves and I'm getting the KOF one as a gift soon. But I don't think I can do that again without a lot of research into who you choose to publish. That trust is forever broken.

Bitmap Books answer to this is to just stop posting on BlueSky completely, while continuing to post on Facebook and Instagram and just not mentioning the book in question there. It’s a really bad look.

Bitmap Books is trying out that new style of marketing campaign that Ubisoft and Sucker Punch did recently. Change your statement to please the incels that never bought your stuff and will boycott company. After this, be boycotted by the people who used to buy their stuff. Double Boycott Combo

I'd be wary. I saw some of what happened in real time and he never seemed to regret what he said for a very long time. Now, after feeling harassed by accountability he apologizes and that's it? It's all made good? I hope the apology is sincere but I also feel like outright believing it is naive.

I didn't know anything about this guy or this situation but I see his post after apologizing is "I beat cancel culture!!" Lol, seems like a disingenuous douche unless I'm missing a terrible joke?

I mean its fine if you don't wanna buy the book because of the author's tweets. But it seems like bitmap tried to extort him out of his royalties, while they were still going to profit off the book. That was a scumbag decision, that I'm glad was reversed.

Really disappointed, esp given the author is now celebrating "beating cancel culture". No, you got called out for a horrendous take that you clearly didn't actually feel apologetic about. Backing this author is not the route to take.
