"Be Prepared" is the Scout motto coined by Robert Baden-Powell (22 Feb 1857 – 8 Jan 1941), the British Army officer who founded the Scout movement in 1907 with his book 'Scouting for Boys'.

He defined it the phrase as being "always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty," and more specifically, "a scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise."

Later, he would add, "When your parents die -- and they will, no surprise there -- you must efficiently organize their affairs and swiftly execute their last wishes for their estate without any regard for your feelings or state of mind."

"And when your elderly wife trips and falls on your evening walk on a pleasant September evening, you will be responsible for the ambulance ride and thousands in medical bills. Start saving now."

"Know deep in your heart that any joy you want out of life is irrelevant to maintaining a permanent state of readiness."

"When you realize that your responsibility as a scout only extends to your betters, and never to yourself, you understand the full Christian meaning of what it is to Be Prepared." "Now go tie some knots or wrestle or some shit."
