“I’ve watched aged care navigate Royal Commission, funding reforms, workforce shortages and global pandemic but this feels different. This may prove to be point where the sector realises the old maths and the old business plans no longer work. And withdraw their services. Understandably.” #auspol

“Boards are already making decisions. Operators are saying we don’t want to play in this game. Last week Anglicare exited community home care. This week, Royal Freemasons Victoria announced the sale of its home care business to Regis. I don’t expect they’ll be last.” #auspol @johnmenadue.com

“Albo Govt has deferred introduction of price caps…. If providers have already increased prices significantly and still earning less while older Australians receive fewer hours of care, how much further pricing can go before current model reaches its limits?” #auspol

Fuck me. They are going to wait until the DIY home suicide black market explodes. No way to downsize, no way to stay home, no way to gain reasonable care, just corporate profiteers and private equity suckage.

“If utilisation remains at 75%, around $2 billion of the circa $8 billion allocated annually to Support at Home isn’t being converted into care. Also policy mission failure.” #auspol

“The challenge: StewartBrown report shows, package utilisation has fallen from around 90% to 75% in just 5 months, thanks to new government co-contribution policy. The average older Australian is now receiving just 4 hours of direct home care each week. This must be policy mission failure.” #auspol

“Demand for aged care has never been stronger. As Sam Rae and Mark Butler note at every single press conference, around 90,000 Australians will celebrate their 80th birthday this year.” #auspol

“Two weeks ago, StewartBrown’s residential aged care survey found that number of aged care homes running at an operating loss had jumped to 62%, up from 49% in March 2025. That is 1,750 homes losing money every day. A wake-up call for every provider, every board and every Government.” #auspol

Where tf is the money going! My parents care was / is so expensive that few people under 60 will be able to afford even half the bills! My Super wouldn't cover the deposit! What a mess, and the Boomer bulge hasn't even arrived yet.

Well all you can hope for is John Howard and all the facilitators of care for profit, spend their last days enjoying the care provided by their preferred system!

Re-nationalising essential services killed by profiteers will be a real battle. Sadly, it's going to take a lot more Aussies on skid row before it can even start. Some sort of honest or competent governance and public service leadership too... All while the climate crisis is getting started.

“Support at Home providers over 5 mths increased prices 38% but operating profit sank from 4.5% to 0.6%. On $8 billion annual Support at Home revenue, this equates to $3.3billion over 5 months but only $20 million profit for 800 operators, or $25,000 each. All that work supporting 364,000 people.”

“Last night, StewartBrown’s latest Support at Home Financial Performance Survey revealed home care providers had recorded their zero (0.6%) quarterly operating result under the new Aged Care Act, despite operators increasing prices by an average of 38% in the same period.” #auspol

You should be able to access it by clicking the caption under the image. Basically, SAH is proving unprofitable for providers as clients are under-utilizing services, probably due in part to the onerous co-payments. Govt wouldn't care as the unused funds get clawed back into revenue.
