26d. Also eliminate NOAA office of oceanic and atmospheric research

Tom Di Liberto@tdiliberto.bsky.social

Trump's Budget is out. For NOAA, it's exactly what the previous passback document showed. Trump administration eliminations NOAA's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research in its ongoing fight against science and reality. www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/...

26e. Back to NSF, we are all becoming either AI geoscientists, critical mineral geoscientists, or natural hazard geoscientists now. A bunch of climate work can be done under this umbrella, but a lot less funds overall.

26f. NASA cuts would slash missions, severely impacting JPL and Goddard Space Flight Center

Paul Voosen@voosen.me

Breaking from @science.org: The Trump administration wants to kill off a host of active and healthy NASA climate and planetary spacecraft. It would be a "leaner, more focused" agency, they say -- and one far less capable of studying the Earth and exploring space.

26g. DOE budget slashes Biological & Environmental Research by almost 60%, focused particularly on “environmental system sciences, atmospheric system research, earth system modeling, data management, and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement”

29. National Science Foundation targeted for eviction (reported June 24, 2025 with announcement expected June 25, 2025)

Dan Garisto@dangaristo.bsky.social

NEW: NSF will be kicked out of their building. Announcement will be made tomorrow by HUD Sec. and Governor of VA. HUD will take over the NSF building over the next two years. NSF staffer: "There is no planning for NSF, no identified future location, appropriation for a new building or a move."

31. NSIDC discontinuing sea ice data based on the DOD Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder because of DOD discontinuation of processing (June 30, 2025)

Zack Labe@zacklabe.com

Awful. More horrible science news "The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) learned yesterday that the Department of Defense (DoD) will stop processing & delivering the Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data no later than 30 June 2025."

31 (cont). This discontinuation also impacts other areas, like hurricane monitoring

Michael Lowry@michaelrlowry.bsky.social

A huge blow was dealt to hurricane forecasters this week as a critical tool was abruptly terminated by the Department of Defense and NOAA. The immediate discontinuation of data from three weather satellites will severely impact hurricane forecasts this season and beyond. More ⬇️

Update to 30. RIP globalchange.gov, June 30, 2025. I am not sure how old the site was, but it was first archived by @archive.org on August 15, 2000. (Note that this is all of the US Global Change Research Program website, not only the National Climate Assessments)

Emily Atkin@emorwee.bsky.social

BREAKING: A source tells me that the Trump administration has shut down public access to every single National Climate Assessment, the Congressionally-mandated quadrennial report assessing how climate change is affecting the U.S. This is what you get when you try to access them online

32. Furloughing of NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoc fellows and hiatus on new fellowships (July 9, 2025)

nytimes.comRecipients of a U.S. Climate Science Fellowship Are Put on Unpaid Leave
Jessica Tierney@leafwax.bsky.social

As of today, all current NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellows have been furloughed due to the Dept of Commerce not releasing the funding for the program. In addition no new Fellows were awarded this year. cpaess.ucar.edu/cgc

35. EPA preparing to revoke endangerment finding, in spite of all evidence that climate change does indeed endanger human welfare (July 23, 2025)

Elizabeth Kolbert@elizkolbert.bsky.social

Trump administration is going to go after the "endangerment finding" that's the basis of pretty much all federal climate regulation. A huge gift to the fossil fuel industry and a "screw you" to the world.

36. DOE managed to find the five credentialed scientists who’ve made their recent careers as professional climate skeptics to write the scientific underpinnings of the proposed endangerment repeal (July 29, 2025)

37. In the endangerment finding repeal proposed rule, EPA seems to be laying the groundwork for removing the National Academies as the exemplar of high-quality peer review (July 29, 2025)

Bob Kopp@bobkopp.net

Beyond the obvious science denial, here's a subtle attack on the processes of scientific integrity in the endangerment repeal notice of proposed rulemaking.

Update to 31. A reprieve for the satellite data the DOD was providing to NOAA, it seems.

John Morales@johnmoralestv.bsky.social

My first-to-report post has been independently confirmed by @michaelrlowry.bsky.social with my NOAA source. See NOAA's official statement on the matter. Result is that the SSMIS microwave scans critical for monitoring tropical cyclones will remain online. Partial but big, big relief 😮‍💨

38. Planning for termination of Orbiting Carbon Observatories (August 4, 2025)

NPR@npr.org

The Trump administration has asked NASA staffers to draw up plans to end at least two satellite missions that measure carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, according to current and former NASA employees.
