Imagine @steampowered.com releases a new version of Steamdeck, that is slightly more powerful, but comes without a display or controller, and works with external display and bluetooth controllers. Would you buy it? Sounded silly in 2018, doesn’t sound half-bad in 2024.

But you're a PC player. You're comfortable handling a PC. Meanwhile quite a lot of console userbase that wants more from their consoles than Call of Duty, FIFA, and Ubi-games is facing a real dilemma when the PS5 / Xbox X|S generation ends.

Oh I get that. For me, plugging my laptop in is easy. But even then, I'd still love to have a Steam Deck under my TV. But the current Steam Deck hardware would melt trying to drive a modern large display is the issue. I have a Series X that is basically my Game Pass TV box. But, no Steam.

Now, that said as well, a lot of smart TVs have the Steam Link app available, as do Amazon Fire Sticks, which will just stream your PC to your TV and if you have even decent wi-fi, does a remarkably good job. Of course, LG WebOS is one of the ones that doesn't have it yet. 🙄

Yeah, I know. This isn't however something the general userbase will understand and utilize. I have one of the Samsung QLED Smart-TVs with built-in GamePass support, so technically I don't need a console to play gamepass games, just a controller paired with the TV. I used this once. Once.

Fair point. My point of view is probably just too skewed to make a good call. What just scares me is how Steam is slowly but surely taking over the whole gaming market. Monopoly is never good for the customers, so I'd rather see some challengers succeed than giving too much power to Steam.

Even though I don't own a PC handheld (cause I have my laptop for now), I love how the Steam Deck has kicked that market in gear again and big players like ASUS and Lenovo are now into it. I think if the AMD Z Extreme can get a couple more generations in, things could be very interesting.

I agree there as well. I just wish they'd do it by competing properly, rather than trying to buy their way into the market with an inferior product and buying exclusives and just being contrarian to anything Steam does. i.e. Epic allowing NFT and crypto scams on their store because Steam didn't.
