National Guard at Malcolm X Park

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social

Heads up: The National Guard will patrol Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park 24/7 "for the foreseeable future," per an email from the superintendent of Rock Creek Park. The request came from U.S. Park Police, which traditionally patrols the park, due to "high levels of incidents."

Here's my weekly must-reads list, a frontline dispatch from a D.C. organizer, and my final thoughts for the week. One thing I took away from my exchange with Shannon Clark, a mutual aid organizer in D.C., is that "having great networks already in place" has been crucial. Let's all take note.

Give Snow Shovels, Not Bullets, to the National Guard in DC | I didn't witness one National Guard soldier help a mother with a stroller or a person walking with a cane. "That's not our job," they said.

Free DC about the continued National Guard presence

Free DC@freedcproject.bsky.social

DC did not ask for the National Guard. DC does not consent to federal occupation. DC deserves self-determination. This is not “public safety.” This is federal control. apnews.com/article/nati...

Two videos, ten minutes apart. This is what the federal occupation of DC looks like. They let them off with a citation. This is not normal. This is fascism. This is authoritarianism. Do not look away. @freedcproject.bsky.social @washprobs.bsky.social @dearwhitestaffers.bsky.social

Countless photos like this one of national guard in the city

Michael Clemens@mclem.org

The Washington DC metro, now. Much of the populace here now accepts absolutely pointless occupation by military troops as a backdrop, a ho-hum feature of daily life. It is not. Persistence does not diminish the outrage, but magnifies it. Conservative and Liberal Americans reject military rule.
