The thing about these AI data centers being built is that they are big boxes full of graphics cards. Good for very specific tasks, not good for general computer things. And they draw tremendous amounts of power because graphics cards are very power-hungry

No one who’s against these hyperscale data centers is seriously saying that all data centers should go away (except anti-civs and, well…) We recognize that data centers for cloud computing are useful in general but that’s not what these massive tech companies are building

I think even "graphics cards" hides how bespoke this compute is. One can't take the GPU component out of a server rack to upgrade their PC. Once these data centers lie fallow, that's essentially dead silicon.
