Tonight the temperature is forecast to drop to 23°F / -5°C. This is colder than it's been here in the past 15 years. I have given my landscaping up for dead and am hoping a drip from a few faucets is enough to keep my plumbing from cracking.

I recently turned off the pump and water heater for my Mom's house and drained the pipes, since she's visiting us in California for an extended stay. I wanted to be prepared in case there's a power outage. I hope I did it right. Studying how the plumbing worked was interesting.

I agree that plumbing is interesting; our plumber definitely earns his fees! I wish your mom's house the best and I hope her visit with you is going well.

I'm not familiar with draining the plumbing - my most concern is the PVC pipe that brings city water up out of the ground, into a pressure regulator, and then into the house. We still seem to have water pressure now in the morning so I am optimistic that the towels I wrapped around it did their job!
