A recap of #atmosphereconf 2026 as well as an overview of why I'm spending my very limited free time in my life betting on ATProto (and why I think you should, too!) This isn't just for developers. This is for everyone. brittanyellich.com/atproto/

I really love bluesky for what they are doing with DNS usernames and similar but I really don't get why they couldn't use ActivityPub and instead created their own protocol.

That's so good. I think the interdisciplinary nature of the conference was one of the best things. And it was great to meet you!

It’s was a liberal western dream ( that I shared ) that connecting people would bring everyone together. However it simply made it painfully clear that people think differently at fundamental levels and it’s probably better if we keep to ourselves culturally. Ironic and sad but clearly true.

I think that there are likely ways to build something interconnected with safe, shared spaces away from the masses that would allow folks to live with their own shared values. I agree, humans aren't made to hear from everyone 100% of the time.

Thanks for posting. A lot of your points in the post are the same I’ve seen elsewhere to promote ActivityPub. What made you decide to go all in on ATProto instead of ActivityPub? (I’m on both and am not partial to either)

Good question! I tried out Mastodon but it was too complicated for me to build into a regular habit. It seems great for a technical audience with more patience than me but I couldn't get it to work for me. That's probably just my own preference, though. There's no shade meant there

Yeah Mastodon definitely has a higher barrier to entry. I put time into it in fall of 2022 and it took me a few hours to create an account and understand the structure of different instances. Not sure if it’s easier now.

Every protocol that changed the internet eventually had someone say "this isn't just for developers." The ones that meant it actually won. Betting ATProto is serious about that part.

You're welcome! TIL about Chaos Machine, which I have just added to my reading list. I also loved Careless People: I tore through the last third of it in one sitting.. I just could not put it down.

Looks like I have two new books to read on my flight back 😅 thx for the write-up and great talking to you at #ATmosphereConf!
