i used to have this noble savage view. living in rural ohio for a bit completely disabused me of it. these people aren't "voting against their interests" or "disempowered." ensuring the suffering of the people they don't like is simply more important to them than bettering their own lives.

I think rural red areas should have hospitals and mail and broadband but I want people to be clear eyed about what rural America is and isn’t, and what it definitely emphatically isn’t is a sleeping giant of left wing revolutionaries in waiting or even a reliable source of potential Democrat voters.
