I see a ton of AI pessimism on here, and its understandable to a degree considering a lot of it feels like solutions in search of problems IMO. So here’s a question for self-described AI skeptics: Is there a use case for AI that excites you, either available now or conceivably in the near future?

Not really. But “ai” is such a bs term. If we’re talking LLMs I see them more like a linked-list or a binary tree: a low level tool to be integrated into a wider context and there they make loads of sense. It’s bonkers what people are doing now.

I like that perspective. When it becomes useful as a component in a system, it’s kinda no longer “AI”. Like vector embeddings in search engines, it’s an implementation detail more than a feature on its own.

In fact, did you know that one of the early research aims of “AI” was garbage collection in programming languages. Java, JavaScript, Python all famously have a GC. As soon as it was achieved it wasn’t AI anymore. Yet it still appears magical to most programmers.
