we are absolutely missing a critical culture right now, it's been subsumed by fandom, and reading a knowledgeable, high brow critique of a film like Emily Wilson wrote is just so *refreshing*

I don't care that it's a little mean at points. Christopher Nolan is wiping away his tears with hundred dollar bills at this point, it's the biggest movie in the world, who gives a shit.

Sadly the answer to who gives a shit is untold bazillions of deeply concerning boring little men who've bizarrely been conditioned to think profit is the be all and end all of any form of art.

is he not rich enough to get the larger tear-wiping bills they print for billionaires yet? also, i take the *tiniest* bit of umbrage with the term “fandom” in this specific case. because it’s been successfully, negatively associated with women having and building subject matter expertise

I do think there isn't a better name for the culture of "nice" adoration of large media properties though. agree that it has this connotation too, but sometimes things are multifaceted, and you just have to talk about it critically without being misogynistic, rather than inventing a new term.

yeah, it was a tiny bit of umbrage it was a good point that spurred me to think about how classicists, art historians, boring historians, physicists, etc ARE fangirls who committed to the craft. there HAS to be a term for the artificial replacement of history with a shallow monoculture
