Encrypting web browsing protects users not only from government surveillance but also from malicious tampering by hackers, but it works best when it’s used all the time.

To that end, we welcome the implementation of Google Chrome’s plans to warn users before visiting an insecure site, both as an added protection and as a sign that encryption on the web has become the norm.

Earlier this year we enabled this feature for users enrolled in Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing, and now we extended this protection to all users by default.

That said, implementing nudges and fixes for these remaining unencrypted connections will be challenging and require trade-offs – for instance, there are issues with backward compatibility and information access, low-power IoT devices, and local networks.
