That's funny, I don't recall the Mayor tacking on a condemnation of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan/Iraq onto his post about the anniversary of 9/11, much less one three times longer than the initial statement.
When we honor the 911 dead, I think of the 1000s of Chilean civilians who murdered in the 911 there in part by the Nixon admin. We helped kill those people but have erased the memory. A girl I knew in highschool died on a floor above the plane. It doesn't dishonor her to recall the dead in Chile.
It isn't a sorry for your loss but. It's remember and mourn all the dead associated with the event including those that came before and after--because it is all one on-going tragedy.
Cool, when they commemorate the “Nakba” we’ll be sure to always make it about the 800,000 Mizrahi Jews expelled at the same time from all the Muslim countries. It should be about them too. Right?
My concern is for America's responsibility. Mamdani as mayor of a diverse city had a responsibility to acknowledge both Jewish and Palestinian deaths. He erred in the detail he went into--the statistics. I think his statement should have been "We mourn all the civilian deaths in this conflict."
On 9/11 we don’t mourn the civilian deaths of the Afghanistan or Iraq wars, now do we? He criticizes Israel on the other 364 days just fine. He could’ve shut up here out of respect, but he chose not to, and we all know why.
