I actually think the core point you're trying to make is perfectly correct, but I think the nature of what happened with Vlad the Implier and Danya is a lot more disgusting and personal. The man knew he was the other's childhood idol. FIDE has always been corrupt as hell long before Putin.

there was definitely "Their side/our side"-ism with how biased the other Russian GMs were like Grischuk and Dubov, but it's hard for me to accept this framing. Kramnik is a raging NPD case who clearly never ever got over when Topalov's team accused him of cheating in 2006.
