did u know i made 175 pixel fonts great for games, videos, stream overlays, etc.? not only are there dozens of families, but many also come with multiple styles so you gain access to bold, italics, and various sizes of the same fonts chevyray.itch.io you can buy them individually too

Neat! I've been working on a bitmap font of my own, on and off for a few years. I've got a few thousand characters supported (most Latin, some Greek), ligatures that use chained contextual substitution for long ffffi chains, currently-incomplete small caps, and a few other things.. But I'm not (c)

… very good at all when it comes to getting the shapes right for some of the more.. Obscure characters. Do any of your fonts support 'Ⱥ', 'Ȼ', 'ȼ', 'Ⱦ', 'ʥ', or 'Σ', to name a few of the problematic characters? I'm really curious how others implement them in a bitmap font! Here's mine of those:

My 'Ⱥ' looks weirdly disjointed to me, and when I see it at a small size it looks almost like an 'h' with the stem slanted forward, with a slash through it. 'Ȼ' and 'ȼ' both look like differently sized and slanty 'e's. 'Ⱦ' looks off-balance to me. 'ʥ' looks good at small sizes, but up close (c)

yeah i can see your problems. pixel fonts really struggle with letters that have lots of overlapping strokes, hence why japanese/chinese pixel fonts tend not to work well at some of the tiny sizes that english/etc. can support. it’s tough, sometimes you can find tricks to make some letters work tho

Here's a more generic sort of question you might have real advice for: In my font, some diacritic marks are an even width, some are an odd width.. And some glyphs are an even width, while others are an odd width. How do you choose the placement of each kind of diacritic on each kind of base glyph?

Especially since I'm trying to support combining characters.. The current anchor points I have set up are an absolute mess and I need to redo it from scratch. I had this weird idea in my head that I could separate base glyphs into categories based on 'leaning direction' and width, and have the (c)

… diacritics also separated into categories, but have alternate 'even' versions of odd-width marks that would get substituted via GSUB rules. But this was not only VERY complicated and tedious, but also didn't account for all the edge cases I came across (and now can't remember, which doesn't help).

Yeah.. I was hoping to at least find out some way to get 'Σ' to behave nicer, but haven't had any luck so far. I've also been musing about an italic version, and ironically I think I can actually have it work well in italics because the top and bottom won't need to line up anymore. Most others (c)
