rare L take from aftermath i get that this is an attempt to show empathy and care for the workers by pushing back against callous layoffs. it’s admirable but the take itself encourages irresponsible behaviour that increases suffering of those same workers think through what actually happens

Ubisoft embargoes journalists reporting on latest round of layoffs aftermath.site/ubisoft-layoff...

a few hours does NOTHING for your ability to prepare for what’s about to happen to you instead: - NO-ONE knows if they have a job - or for how long - if they’re getting severance - if they have health insurance being part of a leaked layoff is WAY worse than one that’s been communicated directly

layoffs are a scourge plaguing our industry but damn would i rather hear it from my manager who can answer all my questions than enter a state of panic while the entire org scrambles and no-one knows anything this feels like an attempt to hit back that only hurts the ones it’s supposed to protect

Yup, agreed. When we got laid off of Xbox last year I had like a week heads up notice that they were happening. None of us knew who was safe, it was awful. The only useful thing we did with the extra time was organize a discord for the whole studio ahead of the layoff, which did pay off.

idk, this is assuming you have a good manager who is able and willing to answer questions honestly. Many layoffs are just you go into a seemingly regular meeting, have the news dumped on you, and your computer immediately wiped remotely. The leak lets workers prepare against that.

Generally I agree with your take *if* you assume the company has the best intentions and is trying to make a difficult situation as painless as possible for people, which is more I'd be willing to grant to the vast majority of giant corps like Ubisoft
