The underlying AT protocol lets you make a decentralised thing or something incredibly centralised. Did the world need a new protocol? Maybe not “need”, but: atproto looks way more likely to foster adoption than the technical feasibility to achieve the same aim using XMPP, or Mastodon, or Matrix.
