❓What's changing: Since 1972, #Medicaid’s retroactive coverage provisions have protected enrollees from medical bills incurred up to 3 months before coverage began. This helps prevent life-altering debt for low-income people & ensures health care professionals get paid for the care they provide.

P.L. 119-21 (aka OBBA) shortens retroactive #Medicaid coverage from: * 3 months → 1 month for low-income/ "expansion" adults (21-64, no dependents/disabilities) * 3 months → 2 months for children, parents, pregnant people, seniors, & people with disabilities #MedSky

‼️Why this matters: In MN, current protections cost <1% of #Medicaid spending but prevented $129M in unpaid bills in 2024. These cuts will hit safety-net hospitals & clinics hardest—especially in rural areas. Service reductions & facility closures could follow, impacting entire communities. #MedSky

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒The Human Cost: While on its face the law appears neutral in its intent its impact won't be. This will worsen #Medicaid barriers that: * Disproportionately burden Black, Indigenous, & rural communities already facing systemic healthcare disparities. #MedSky #BlackSky

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒The Human Cost: While on its face the law appears neutral in its intent its impact won't be. This will worsen #Medicaid barriers that: * Force the poorest families to choose between essential care and financial ruin. #MedSky

These reports aim to: 🔵 provide information & context to decision makers, 🔵 lay a baseline for our measurement of impact over time & 🔵 help us identify communities that will need focused support during implementation to mitigate the harms these cuts to Medicaid will bring. #MedSky
