I have a theory about the general impatience and lack of tolerance people have not only for children, but for any and all habits of others they find annoying. I think it stems from the cultural shift away from public spaces to being home all the time.

I cannot overstate how much I hate when people are dicks about babies crying in public (especially airplanes). Do you think the parent is having a good time right now?? Do you think they are not aware of the situation??? Are you going to negotiate with a literal infant????

We've grown accustomed to having control over our environments, so when we're forced to share space with other people who bother us (like on a plane, say) we lack the emotional capacity to just tune it out. Instead of a mild annoyance, it becomes a disruption we cannot ignore.

I think the test of my theory is: How tolerant were the Boomers and early generations, really? My impression, from the people I know, is that Boomers and earlier generations were still annoyed, but responded by keeping it to themselves and trying to tune out the annoyance. But I can't be sure!
