The reason I've gone more left in recent years is that I previously accepted that we simply couldn't afford decent cheap housing, heavily subsidised transport, a universal basic income, etc. Then in 20 years in politics I saw what we actually could afford. And it's a lot. It's just never for you.

The people who tell you money doesn't grow on trees, or quote Thatcher by saying "the problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money" are constantly running out of other people's pension funds with their dumb startup ideas that somehow got Series A funding.

The people who tell you that you should be able to afford to feed a family on 50 quid a week argue that this doesn't even cover a single breakfast when it's applied to them.

This warped and disingenuous idea of socialism being a free for all for layabouts actually does exist. It just exists for rich, privileged people who consider it their entitlement. If you're from a poor background, that comes with guilt about earning or having too much money. They never had that.

Marx had their number: "the Tories in England long imagined that they were enthusiastic about monarchy, the church, and the beauties of the old English Constitution, until the day of danger wrung from them the confession that they are enthusiastic only about ground rent"
