1️⃣ year ago, the International Court of Justice confirmed that States have binding obligations to respect, protect & fulfill human rights in addressing the climate crisis, incl. the right to a clean, healthy & sustainable environment. A🧵on the #ICJClimateAO& the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll.

⚖️🌱 This legal affirmation is built on widespread recognition of the right. It was the culmination of decades of work by communities, advocates, Indigenous Peoples, youth, scientists, and civil society who pushed for environmental protection to be recognized as a human right.

✊ Like the ICJ Climate Advisory Opinion, the call to recognize the right to a healthy environment was built on global solidarity, collective action, mobilization across generations and regions.

Especially after the #ICJClimateAO, maintaining that gap has become impossible to justify. 500+ civil society organizations are working together (@healthyenvcoe.bsky.social) to ensure that the @coe.int adopts a legally binding instrument protecting this right: healthyenvironmenteurope.wordpress.com

The Heads of State & Government of the Council of Europe’s Member States committed, in 2023, to building on the political recognition of the right to a #HealthyEnvironmentForAll. Since then, momentum is building; NOW @coe.int Member States must turn words into action!
