a thread 🧵 Elected Republicans are reportedly really upset that Donald has now officially allied the U.S. with Russian against Ukraine. Some big Bluesky accounts say they're powerless to stop him. Other big Bluesky accounts say that's nonsense, that there are a ton of things they can do.

If Hakeem Jeffries was playing hardball, he'd exploit the divisions between Rs and drive a wedge right into the jugular. He could get all his people ready for it, then quietly behind the scenes get 5 or 6 R defectors to join them in a decent sized auditorium and declare the presence of a quorum.

That means that they have a majority of duly elected House members, and can make decisions for the House. They then vote to vacate the speakership, and elect a new speaker who then calls them into session. 1st item on the agenda? Impeaching Trump for treason.

Is it a rather simple thing to do? Yes. Is it easy? No. Quietly finding the defectors would be quite difficult. Would Jeffries ever consider playing hardball? Not a chance.... or... remember what happened when the Pope visited the very powerful leader of the House John Boehner?

The betrayal of Ukraine could be a great wedge issue if exploited through the impeachment process. Jeffries wouldn't even have to do fancy quorum tricks. He could just wait 'till Nov 9 and invoke Rule IX to force a vote. His GOP colleagues would have to choose: betray Trump or kiss Putin's ass?
