Doom posting a bit. The internet feels like a very distracted place. Excessively so- more than ever before. I've been finding it increasingly difficult to talk in an earnest way about interests and thoughts pretty much anywhere online

Reactionary discourse is in every aspect of communication from world news to media, games & music, even niche hobbies. It manifests in the way people talk. It feels as though people talk about each other, and at each other, instead of to each other

It's not just online, either. I've been attending more in person local events in the last year than ever before. And although it's better there, many people still pull out their phones and glaze over so fast during any down time

In times like these I usually just shrug, work on personal projects and keep to myself. But I can't shake the feeling that something different is happening. Everyone is feeling something these days. But what is it?

I remember reading a book in college talking about what it takes for people to be happy, and a big thing they mentioned was a sense of trust. Frankly, there just isn't a lot of that. Speaking within my circles, there's a lot that's been shaken of that in games alone between mass layoffs and AI.

And that's before getting into the political climate and the general lack of trust that things are going to take the avenues to get better when so many bad actors with influence are driving things to get worse. It's exhausting enough to take energy even out of doing fun things like hobbies.

There is a malaise of the soul. Lots of contributors, making it difficult to diagnose. imo the world is in a bad place right now, affecting the mental state of people. Distraction from brain fatigue. Alleviated by dopamine via videos, posts, and AI LLMs. I've noticed some of this w/ me, at least.
