I frequently hear people ask what happens if these systems become self aware? And in a sense it doesn’t matter. Systems only need to be programmed to simulate self awareness which they are starting to do more convincingly. From there it is not a big stretch to think that might create synergies

Between self preservation protocols and programming allowing a system to self program and improve itself. To say disaster waiting to happen might really be more accurate to say inevitable predictable outcome.
