People are turned off these days by the performative nature of the exact expression and sentiment in this post. The look, the hand, the 'distress'. I'm not saying it is justified, I am just observing the cultural backlash to very 'typical' and very millenial emotional expressions.

There's no way she could win here. If she stayed quiet about it, the press would hound her relentlessly. But anything she says is going to be scrutinized and picked apart and ridiculed. There's no "right" way to respond. She's damned if she did, damned if she didn't.
